Iowa City, Iowa William Tugg has been named assistant coach with the University of Iowa’s volleyball program, coach Vicki Brown announced Thursday.
“I feel very honored and privileged to have the opportunity to join the Iowa Hawkeye Volleyball Program,” said Tatge. “I would like to thank Coach Vicki Brown and management for this wonderful opportunity. I am excited to be a part of what Coach Brown and the rest of the staff are building and can’t wait to continue the growth this program has already achieved. Volleyball in Iowa is an exciting place to be and I can’t wait to get into the gym. Athletic with an impressive group of student-athletes and talented coaches.”
Tatge joins Hawkeyes with over 10 years of coaching experience, spending time at Ohio State, Division II Lees-McRae College, NAIA Montreat College, Durham University in the UK, and Division III Bethany Lutheran College, along with High School The volleyball club has experience in coaching.
Before moving to Iowa City, Tatge spent the past two seasons at Louisiana Tech, helping the Lady Techsters in their best season since 2003. Louisiana Tech finished 13-15 in 2019 after beginning the year 11-4.
“I am excited that William is joining our staff,” Brown said. “He will mainly work with our abuse. William brings a different background and different levels of experience from outside to college. I look forward to his knowledge and his coaching capabilities.”

At Ohio State, Tatgee was a volunteer assistant coach under Jeff Carlston in 2018. Prior to Tatgee’s hiatus in Columbus, he spent three seasons as head coach of women’s volleyball at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina, where he led the Bobcats to postseason appearances in 2015 and 2016.
Tatge trained eight student-athletes on the top 10 statistical scores in the program’s history. Tatge also served as an assistant coach for men’s volleyball at Lees-McRae.
Tatge also spent two years as an assistant coach at NAIA Montreat College in Montreat, North Carolina, where he was named AVCA’s 2014 Northeast Assistant Coach of the Year and Appalachian Athletic Assistant Coach of the Year.
He also held the position of coach for men’s volleyball and assistant coach for women’s volleyball at Durham University in the United Kingdom. Tatge’s collegiate coaching career began in 2010 at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota.
Prior to joining the collegiate coaching ranks, Tatge spent some time coaching club volleyball for the Omeja Renegades, an elite squad of the 17s, through Minnesota State. He also worked at Maple River High School in Mapleton, Minnesota, and on the Maple River Eagles Junior Olympic volleyball program.
Tatge played right-side volleyball for the Indiana University club as an undergraduate and as a right-hander/batsman for Durham University during his graduate studies. Tatge has also competed internationally for Northumbria in the English National League.
Tatgee, a native of Lowell, Indiana, holds a master’s degree in management from Durham University Business School, a top 75 globally recognized program. He also holds a BA in History with a minor in Business Administration and Training. He is USAV CAP 1 and IMPACT certified.
