Northwest preview

The Wildcats are entering the Final Four against Syracuse looking to make their ninth National Championship appearance for a chance at their eighth title. From 2005 through 2012, coach Kelly Amonte Heller led the program to six consecutive titles and all nine games in the Final. The program has experienced a major drought since then but is in an excellent position to deliver.

For Northwestern, it’s all about attacking. The team has two unparalleled top 10 scorers in the country. Lauren Gilbert finished seventh, averaging 4.33 goals per game, while Junior Easy Scanney led the nation with 6.27 goals per game. In the Elite Eight of the Wildcats’ confrontation with Duke No. 7, Gilbert and the inhabitants outdo the Blue Devils themselves. Gilbert scored six goals, while Scanney added five goals in seven shots on target, as well as assists. It should come as no surprise that Northwestern led the nation in points difference, winning by 10.4 points per game. Their offensive line will face their match against the orange Syracuse team.

Syracuse preview

Hoping to make a second appearance in the national championship game and win its first title, Syracuse knows how to score properly alongside Northwestern. The orange finished the season just 22 goals behind the Wildcats with 287 goals, the seventh most in the country. Although they may not have the consistent firepower of a single player, Syracuse has been driven by consistent contributions as a team.

Herein lies the way orange can advance northwest and advance. Teamwork will be needed to shut down Scance and force Gilbert and the rest of the team to take on the burden. Of course, this is easier said than done and has definitely been tried before. It will also require an extraordinary effort from Orange’s defense which has allowed the 11th most goals scored this season. That’s what it takes to be a champion, and Syracuse has to be the best of it all to get through the discomfort.
