Euro2020 around the corner

As Euro 2020 starts tonight, 101 sat down with former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique to talk all things in Spain, including their chances this summer, the exclusion of captain Sergio Ramos and their attacking situation.

Luis Enrique selected a team of 24 men despite the rules allowing him to take 26 for the competition starting with Italy vs Turkey tonight. While his decision to overlook national team captain Sergio Ramos took the headlines, there was also a surprising exclusion for Iago Aspas, who contributed 14 goals and 13 assists in La Liga during 2020-21.

Spain’s Striker opportunities

As a result of the 33-year-old not participating in the tournament, Spain’s only Orthodox striker in the squad is Alvaro Morata and Villareal’s Gerard Moreno, although the latter has also played much of his career on the right wing.

It is still unclear which of these two will start, so we asked Jose Enrique about the pair.

Ask the former Liverpool defender about Morata, Enrique said:

“He is a player who is very, very experienced. I think with all the tournaments he’s played, it’s probably the most important thing for him to show himself, because he’s been to Real Madrid, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and obviously Juventus again.

He is a player who has proven himself in the past, but he is a player who has to show why he has been in these teams.

Then he also has competition, do not give me wrong. Gerard Moreno, the striker from Villareal, is a really good player.

I’m not sure if he [Luis Enrique] must play with both of them or if he just wants to play with one. If he’s playing with one, I’m not even sure it’s going to be the most important one, Alvaro Morata, if I’m honest with you.

I do not think he is 100% sure of his place and if he is, it is because Gerard Moreno will play in another position.

“There has always been doubt about Alvaro Morata. It is always – Great player, he does so well, but there is always doubt there “

It’s time to prove himself, he is a great player and he now has a chance to prove himself.

“Obviously at Juventus he did really well and that’s why he came back to Real Madrid, but then at Atletico Madrid he was so-so, at Chelsea he was obviously not great, so as I say, it’s a time for him to shine and he has all the qualities to do so. Hopefully he can handle it ”.
