It’s hard for anyone to understand Conor O’Neill’s past year after his father and uncle took their lives.

O’Neal won his first EuroPro Tour title by one stroke at Donington Grove after the final round of 68, dedicating his victory to his late father and family.

“I’ve been trying to win here for a long time. I had the worst time of my life last year,” he said.

“I have no words, I am so happy and I wish my father was here to see and he deserved this more than me, to be honest with what he did for me.

“There’s more to life than golf, what my family has gone through to give them something to smile about you know because we’re not smiling at the moment.

“I’m happier for them than I am, to be honest.”

O’Neill’s win earns him £12,500 and also sees him move to the top of the race to the Canadian Ranking of Merit after two events.

“I just got a full 360,” he said, “I just went for everything I’m so glad it paid off.”

Overnight leader Rudy Flasfield collapsed early, never fully recovered in the end and had to get a ninth share after the final round of 76.

Dutchman Vlasfeld had a track record 62 yesterday, but quickly showed how easily fortunes can change on the track.

Monday’s playoff Jeff Wright had a great week running on O’Neill to 18 as the bogey meant he couldn’t force a playoff.

Wright of Forres Golf Club fell on the level approaching Fairytale Week.

He shared a runner-up finish with veteran EuroPro Tour player George Walgar.

Walgar had gone through today’s round pressed 67 (-5) and moved into the top five in the race standings to Kannada.

The tour moves west to Cumberwell Park next week from June 16 to June 18 where it will host the playoffs on Tuesday, June 15.

Donnington Grove highlights will be broadcast on Sky Sports Golf every week on Tuesday (22 June) and will be available worldwide through our various broadcasters including Matchroom.
