Jesse Creel praised the influence of veterans Morne and Frans Stein in the current Springbok squad.
Stein has been named to South Africa’s 46-man squad to face the British and Irish Lions from next month, making them the only survivors of the 2009 Pokémon team that faced the Lions 12 years ago.
“When you look at Steyns, there is an expectation that experienced guys will always talk and give advice,” Kriel said.
Certainly not the case. They just focus on doing the basic things well and minimizing their mistakes. For them, it’s about setting an example. They set standards in training and are fully committed.
When some words are needed, they come forward and make good contributions when necessary. They are the kind of players I look up to and we make sure that these standards are followed.
While Kriel and Frans Steyn are Bok’s teammates, the former is yet to play alongside Morne Steyn, who fired a long-range penalty at Loftus to settle the 2009 Test series between South Africa and the Lions; He says they will likely line up alongside a veteran flyhalf that will be special.
“It’s really special,” he said.
‘Back in 2009, I was still in school. I specifically remember the brilliant Jaque Fourie trying and of course kicking Morne. It’s great to have Morne on the team again.
