Ramos’ reaction

With Euro 2020 kicking off tomorrow, 101 He sat down with former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique to talk about all things Spain, including the sudden dismissal of his country’s captain.

Luis Enrique announced that he would have a 24-man squad, instead of the 26 players allowed by the tournament hosts. Even more shocking, however, is the decision to expel Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos and La Roja from the entire squad.

Ramos is now 35 and has struggled with injuries this season, but has struggled to make himself fit for the national team this summer. However, his efforts proved in vain, as Luis Enrique turned him down.

Jose Enrique, the former left-back for Liverpool and Newcastle, has hinted that it is an unpopular decision.

Enrique said:

“To be honest, I would have met Sergio Ramos because just having him in the team with the younger players and everything like that would make a huge difference.

And I think even when he’s not 100%, he’s an experienced player at the highest level. It’s not just about quality in these types of tournaments, it’s about experience as well.

When you get far in the tournament, the pressure starts to hit. You have a country behind you, it’s not easy.”

He completed:

“These types of players, they have the experience, they’ve won everything they can as a player in both the national team and their club, so I wouldn’t have left him off the field.

I understand more [leaving out] Dani Carvajal because he’s probably not as important, even if I loved Dani Carvajal. But I’m not sure about leaving Sergio.

When we won everything, the World Cup and the European Cup twice, our team was Barcelona and Real Madrid players, and that was our starting lineup.”

“I understand that some of the players who have joined them, the central defender is in better shape than him. Obviously, you cannot doubt that because he has been injured for a while.”

“But I know what it means to have a player like that in the team. At Liverpool it was Stevie J [Steven Gerrard] or Hindu [Jordan Henderson] right Now. He’s the kind of guy who, even if he’s not playing but he’s around the team, you feel his presence and it definitely helps with having him on the team.

We have experienced players but we also have young players on the team so I think he should have signed him. Even if he didn’t play as much, I would definitely accept him.”

With Ramos absent, Aymeric Laporte, Pau Torres, Diego Llorente and Eric Garcia are the only recognized defenders in Luis Enrique’s 24-man squad.
