Italy vs Turkey: Euro 2020 Preview, Predictions & How to Watch

Written by Connor Suess

UEFA Euro 2020 begins today with Group A play. Turkey prepares to face Italy this afternoon, and tomorrow morning Switzerland and Wales will battle it out as the group stage kicks off.

In a battle between the favorites to win the first set, both teams will want to amaze and stun the footballing world. Italy is gearing up for a deep run in the tournament, while Turkey wants to play the role of candidate to wow the Italians in Rome. This could make up not just one of the group stage matches but the entire tournament.

The Turks will be looking to make a stunning first impression on world football when they face group favorites Italy. Depending on who you ask, most people have either team as a “dark horse” candidate. However, Turkey sees itself as an underdog and, by the looks of things, will give any team facing a headache.

The powerful center back duo of Caglar Soyuncu and Merih Demiral will be looking to stop the likes of Insigne and Immobile right in their tracks. Hakan Calhanoglu and Ozan Tofan will be looking to create Yusuf Yazaci and Burak Yilmaz, both of whom have won French league titles with Lille.

The work of the candidates in the first group will be cut short for them as they face a disciplined and hardworking team in Turkey. Italy will want to eliminate the heartbreak of losing their last European Championship quarter-final penalty shootout to Germany, and with a mixture of youth and experience, Italy will hope to prove once again that they are the powerhouse of world football.

Gianluigi Donnarumma will try to keep his sheets as clean as possible as he hopes to impress potential players like Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United. The strong partnership between Bonucci and Chiellini at the center back hopes to prove that age is just a number, and Ciro Immobile hopes to make a huge impact in a major championship, something he has struggled with in recent years.

That’s pretty close, but I think Italy has a lot of firepower for the Turks, so I’ll take a 2-1 win for Italy.
