Gavin Coombes cemented his case for Ireland’s call-up with four attempts as Monster ended their season with an elegant eight-time victory over Zebre in Parma.
Craig Casey (two) and Niall Scannell William Combes also crossed while Federico Mori scored the only attempt for the hosts to finish at the bottom of the Rainbow Cup League without any points.
The win lifted Monster above Edinburgh to second place as the 2020-21 season drew to a close.
With Irish coach Andy Farrell set to name his squad for summer Tests on Monday, Combes’ show was another outstanding performance in a stellar season from the 23-year-old’s back row.
Widely expected to be in contention for a pre-match call-up, his impressive display at Parma only boosts his prospects for matches against the United States and Japan in July.
Compis and Casey, another player likely to feature in the Irish next team, each scored twice in the first half as the hosts loosened gears, with the attackers dominating set-pieces to provide a platform for their backs to poke holes in Zebri’s disorganized defence.
Carlo’s two penalties were all the home side had to show in the first half from one side.
There was no complacency from Monster after the break with Niall Scannell touching the city from a knockout, just as Combs did in the first half.
Gavin’s cousin Liam Combs scored his team’s sixth attempt after the hour before his cousin hit a hat-trick and then added a fourth in the final game of the match.
The second half also saw Billy Holland make his 247th and final Monster appearance, with Lock moving into retirement as the second most boycott capped player ever,
