The Spanish midfielder has won the Euro twice and Mount comes out to emulate the player he grew up watching and then trained with
Mason Mount admits he was surprised after meeting Cesc Fabregas in Russia on a trip to the World Cup in 2018.
The young Chelsea midfielder traveled to the tournament, along with Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Tottenham’s Ryan Sessegnon, as the trio combined their journey with media and commercial activity.
Ahead of his first England tournament, Mount spoke about meeting the former Blues midfielder before facing Croatia on Sunday at Wembley and the impact that moment had on him at the time.
What did he say?
“During that trip to Russia, I look at the pictures now and we all look very young,” Mount told reporters. “I remember we were walking around [BBC] We had a little interview with Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker, and we actually stumbled across Cesc Fabregas and chatted a bit.
“He actually reminded me of training at Chelsea, and yes, we know he’s an absolute legend for what he’s done in the sport.
“For us to have a short chat with him and also Lineker and Shearer, it was great being around these guys and learning a little bit from them. It was a special trip and we all enjoyed it.
How will England use Mt?
Three Lions coach Gareth Southgate has used Mount in nearly every game over the past 12 months, and the trend is expected to continue into Euro 2020.
Growing up at the Blues academy at Cobham Training Centre, Mount has learned how to play in a range of positions and is ready to do so for his country over the next few weeks.
“It wasn’t always so focused on winning [as a youngster]It was a lot about learning and learning how to play in difficult matches or in different circumstances how to switch squads or play in different positions.”
“It’s always been something I remember, playing in a lot of different positions when I was younger, learning what it takes to play a right winger, to hold the center, or as a striker. I’ve had a lot of experience in those different formations and situations, so it really helps.
“And now I can feel that I can play in different positions. I know how to adapt, and it helps when you play now.”
