Holmgren was awarded the prize by a familiar face; Close friend, former Gonzaga Bulldogs star and high school classmate, top five pick in upcoming NBA draft Jalen Suggs is expected. Suggs surprised Holmgren over a Zoom call while Holmgren gathered with a group of family and friends in Minnesota to celebrate.
Here’s the moment Jalen Suggs told Chet Holmgren that he won the Gatorade Player of the Year award:

“I was definitely surprised. Being able to see Jalen pop up on screen and have a few words for me was definitely pretty cool,” Holmgren Yahoo Sports said. This award is right there [with the top] Because it not only recognizes my accomplishments on court, but also recognizes things outside of court by helping my community and pushing myself in class.”
Next year, Holmgren hopes to replace the Suggs, and join the Gonzaga squad preparing for another NCAA Tour Championship.
