Phinsider Radio shows notes: 20 training camp stories related to the Miami Dolphins

Phinsider Radio shows notes for June 9, 2021.

Quick notes

  • Mandatory minicamp is 15.-17. June, the end of “Phase 3 of the offseason.”
  • Phase 3 of the offseason is coming to an end…. This means that it is BEFORE THE SEASON …
  • We spend this week going over what we think are some of the best stories going into training camp. Players report for training camp on July 27th.
  • Dolphins to host joint practices with the Falcons.

10 of Phinsider Radio’s 20 Most Popular Stories to Follow When the Miami Dolphins Begin Training.

1. Xavien Howard and contract negotiations.

  • So far, we have only heard rumors that this could happen.
  • To be fair, everything we hear about Howard is usually a rumor.
  • Under contract through 2024.
  • Will account for 7 percent of Miami’s total ceiling this and next year.
  • Byron Jones is the only member of the Miami Dolphins to earn more than Howard this season.
  • Jones will earn $ 2.5 million more than Howard.
  • Howard led the league with 10 interceptions last year.

2. How often will our Twitter timelines be focused on Jacoby Brissett conversation?

  • If Brisset has a few good throws, or Tua fights one day…. Beware!
  • We cling to this practice as if they are games.
  • We thought he was one of the best backup options at quarterback.
  • Last year, he was only used when a big throw #strongarm was needed
  • He will work with Albert Wilson, Allen Hurns, probably Jaylen Waddle. Maybe even Preston Williams and Lynn Bowden Jr.

3. How clear will Miami’s vision be when it comes to planning the backflow depth?

  • Last year, we only talked about Jordan Howard and Matt Breida.
  • Myles Gaskin became the guy, but there were a couple of games where they tried to force Howard.
  • Pandemic and preseason are probably big reasons why we were blind, but still….
  • Gaskin, Malcolm Brown, Salvon Ahmed, Gerrid Doaks, Malcolm Perry, Jordan Scarlett and Patrick Laird all under contract.
  • The team held a backback last year, Carl Tucker of Alabama now on the list.
  • Is this a group that needs reinforcement? Ahmed and DeAndre Washington and even Laird sometimes had big roles at times last year.

4. How soon will we put Jaelan Phillips in the ring of honor?

  • Second team All-American from 2020 is the king of off-season hype.
  • Do not really mean it in a bad way.
  • After that fact, there are lots of people who say that he is the best kantrusher in the draft.
  • Still can’t believe Chris Simms said he was right behind Chase Young if this was last year.
  • He will get his fair share to do a lot of different things because of his versatility.
  • Andrew Van Ginkel, Vince Biegel, Duke Riley (get some hype in June) … no one has a place to start jobs locked inside this group.

5. How many podcasts will we make this season that contain long conversations about downtown Miami?

  • Matt Skura from Baltimore
  • Was okay until he fell into fumbling problems and was benched.
  • Tyler Gauthier spent last year on the training team.
  • The 25-year-old Cameron Tom from Southern Miss is also listed on the depth map, most of his career is in the training team.
  • Michael Dieter can also play center.

Let the investigation between George Godsey and Eric Studsville begin.

  • Most have been critical of this approach by the offensive coordinator.
  • Everyone will top to see who is calling pieces on each exercise.
  • What will the playbook look like?
  • I remember how big I was for Bill Lasor’s offense in the first preseason game … 2014?

7. Who will be Miami’s slot machine back?

  • Has Nik Needham worked for the third year in a row?
  • Does Noah Igbinoghene show why he was taken so early in the draft?
  • Does Justin Coleman go in as an absolute stud?
  • Is Jason McCourty in the mix?

8. Will Christian Wilkins be usable or indispensable in his third season?

  • 43 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 14 games last year.
  • 5 passes defended last year !! And an interception.
  • Two passes defended like a rookie, it’s a giant element of his game, not the biggest guy blowing through double-teams so he can sit back and be that guy on the courts.
  • Also used at times on fullback.

9. Which rookie enters the preseason with the most hype?

  • We heard about Waddle fumbles.
  • Phillips … exactly …
  • Jevon Holland because he starts?
  • Does Liam Eichenberg look like a stud on tackle?
  • Are Hunter Long = Mike Gesicki, Durham Smythe and Adam Shaheen combined?

10. The surprise cuts are coming

  • Dolphins have lots of competitions brewing.
