MARSHALL — Southwestern Minnesota State University’s Angela Young, a senior outside hitter, has been named to the 2020-2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District® 7 volleyball team released Thursday. The selection and announcement were made by the College of American Sports Information Managers (CoSIDA) and honor the nation’s top student athletes for their combined performance both in athletics and in the classroom.
It is the second year in a row that Young has received the CoSIDA Academy Awards in all areas and is one of nine selected for this year’s All Area Team. Young is now applying to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot, in which the first and second winners will be selected from all academics next month.
District 7 is made up of member schools from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) and the Great American Conference (GAC).
A native of Conde, SD, and a 2016 graduate of Clarke High School, Young has a 3.94 GPA in Marketing and Communications. With the 2020 season canceled due to COVID, Young ended her career with 773 deaths and 0.255 injuries in 77 career games.
In her final season on the field, Young won the 2019 All-NSIC First Team Honors to lead SMSU with 420 kills, while recording 248 hits. She also placed third on the team with 251 holes, third with 21 aces, and fifth with 35 blocks.
It’s the fourth year in a row that SMU’s volleyball team has been named its first all-academic academic team, and the eighth since 2007.
