Another prominent American individual sports association has called for the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Just a day later USA Swimming swam out for the game to be moved to 2021, USA Track and Field has done the same.
“Unfortunately, while our world-class athletes are willing to push themselves to their athletic limits in the pursuit of Olympic success, the likelihood is that they will be able to train properly in a safe and appropriate environment and replicate the expertise that we everyone has come to expect does not seem likely in the midst of this global crisis, “said Max Siegel, CEO of USATF in a letter to the Olympic Committee on Saturday.
“As we have learned, our athletes are under tremendous pressure, stress and anxiety, and their mental health and well-being are among our highest priorities.”
The USATF claimed that during the unprecedented worldwide epidemic, incomprehensible disturbances are being caused. The letter said it was the “right and responsible” step to prioritize safety for both athletes, staff and fans.
Olympian hurdler and world champion Lolo Jones tweeted how relieved she felt about her stance.
