Arsenal linked to a sudden move by Brighton defender

Reports have emerged in the past few hours that Arsenal have scored a ‘tangible interest’ in Brighton’s Ben White.

The center back has always been on Arteta’s wish list, and the club appears to have settled on white as a right-sided solution.

The defender, who is currently in the England squad for Euro 2020, made 36 appearances for Graham Potter’s Brighton side as he finished 16th.

However, it was not due to their defense, which ranked eighth in the Premier League.

And now the usually reliable David Ornstein suggests that White has caught the attention of Mikel Arteta and his coaching staff.

Saliba’s future is in doubt:

If Arsenal sign Ben White, it means the club will have Rob Holding, White and returning William Saliba to choose from for the role of right-back, while Calum Chambers is also able to play there.

With Arsenal having no European football, there will likely not be enough time for all three to play to be satisfied with their role at the club. Thus, Saliba, the least experienced of the trio, may find himself out the door, either on loan or on a permanent deal.

It would be even more terrible for the Gunners if they lost the Frenchman, having signed him for £30m in 2019, but they didn’t give him his competitive red-and-white debut.

40-50 m “unlikely to be overcome”

Although the player in question may not excite Arsenal fans, what may be more telling is the notion that £40-50m is considered ‘unlikely to be insurmountable’.

This, combined with Athletic’s claim that “there is a lot of work expected in and out of the Emirates Stadium in the coming months”, suggests Arsenal fans may need to hold on to their hats in this transfer window.

After years of economic austerity at the club, has Kroenke’s team finally realized that to compete at the top level, you have to spend?

This window will show their position.
