The Diamondbacks announced that Executive Vice President and General Manager Mike Hazen is taking an “actual leave of absence” from the team. GM Assistant Amell Soday will handle day-to-day baseball operations, with Hazen consulting regularly.
Sawdaye was one of Hazen’s primary assistants throughout their tenure in Arizona. The two worked together in the Red Sox front office, and Sawdaye followed Hazen into the desert less than two weeks after the latter was appointed as the Diamondbacks general manager. Sawdaye has long been seen as a potential future GM, and was among the finalists for the Angels job that went to Perry Minasian last winter.
Hazen’s wife, Nicole, was battling brain cancer. Nick Bikoro notes from the Arizona Republic. Hazen told reporters.Including Bob Nightingale from USA Today) didn’t feel he could devote the time required to lead the team’s commercial deadline and prepare the draft while taking on his family responsibilities. MLBTR sends our best wishes to the Hazen family.
