Red Bull motorsport manager Helmut Marko believes that George Russell’s move to Mercedes in 2022 is a matter of course and may subsequently lead to Valtteri Bottas’ return to Williams.
Mercedes will soon enter into contract negotiations with both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. So far, all indications are that the seven-time world champion was back online in 2022 based on the Briton’s latest comments.
But a cloud of uncertainty grows incessantly over Bottas ‘fate, leaving most in the F1 paddock, including Marko, and thinks the Finns’ days at Mercedes are numbered.
“That would be the logical step,” Marko said F1-Insider.comwith reference to Russell’s move to Mercedes.
“You can not stand it anymore. Otherwise, the funding no longer makes sense. Although Hamilton will not be happy.”

Marko brings up a fair point as Mercedes has invested heavily in Russell’s F1 training and shaping. Keeping him lingering with Williams in the bottom field would be tantamount to neglecting a significant asset.
Marko also suggests that Russell’s signature might ruin Hamilton’s feathers. The Briton is likely to defend Bottas’ case, claiming that keeping him on the other side of the Mercedes garage will preserve Brackley’s important harmony.
As for Bottas’ future in Formula 1, if Finn’s contract is not renewed, Marko sees only one viable option for the 31-year-old: a return to Williams.
“Bottas does not need to call us,” Marko warned. “There’s no room. In fact, I can only imagine a swap with Russell. I think Williams will be the only option for him.”
