Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar has stated that he is “surprised” that the Indian team was given a three-week break ahead of the five-match Test series against England. India recently fell to New Zealand by eight wickets in the World Trial Championship (WTC) final in Southampton. Their Test series against England will begin with the first match in Nottingham from 4 August. The huge gap between two events is due to the protocols and restrictions related to COVID.

According to Vengsarkar, India could have done with a one-week break. He was quoted as saying in a PTI report, “I enjoyed watching Test cricket during this course. India did very well during this course but what cost them in the final was their poor preparation. They went into such a game without any playing games. On the other hand, New Zealand was fit for the match having already played two matches (against England).

“I don’t know how to deal with this kind of itinerary. Where do you go for a vacation in between and then come back to play test matches. A week’s break was enough after the World Tennis Championships final. The thing is you need to play constantly” I’m surprised that an itinerary was approved This trip.”

India played to their ‘strengths’ in the final of the World Championships of Trading with three players and two spinners. However, due to the circumstances, India missed out on a multi-level bowler like Hardik Pandya, who was not selected as he is unable to run yet. According to Vengsarkar, if Pandya is not available, India should start exploring other options. He said, “If he’s not available, you think of someone who is available. In cricket, nobody is indispensable. Unfortunately, BCCI does not have the right talent scouting team. They have to choose someone who is U-19 and groom for him.”

Vengarkar also questioned the Indian team’s preparations for the World Tennis Championships final against New Zealand. According to the former batsman, India was clearly unprepared for the big occasion. He said:

“If (Kohli) was talking about intent, why didn’t the team prepare properly for this match? Where was the intent then? They should have played at least two matches for four days. You want to know if the players are fit for the match or not by playing those games Fast teams will know what lengths to hit immediately only in those practice games.”

Despite losing in the World Tennis Championships final, Vengsarkar Kohli backed Kohli to continue as captain, he is India’s best choice so far across all three formats of the game.
