Two games, two blowouts.
Vanderbilt ran up seven runs in the first inning of Game 1 of the 2021 College World Series and put Jack Leiter on cruise control to give the Commodores a 1-0 series lead. Mississippi State scored in all but two innings on Tuesday, closing Vanderbilt’s lineup for even the series on a game one piece.
A high-profile affair may not be in the cards for Wednesday, as two of college baseball’s best arms stand the rubber against each other, as the Mississippi state will send Will Bednar out to face Kumar Rocker and Commodores in the title game of this year’s College World Series.
Rocker struck late on Friday to help Vanderbilt defeat NC State and even seize play before Wolfpack was removed due to COVID-19 issues on the team. He had one of the best starts of his season against Mississippi State back on April 23, when he threw a complete game where only two runs – one earned – could cross the home field on three hits, one hit stroke and no walks with eight strikes.
Bednar struck out Saturday in the elimination game against Texas to lead the Bulldogs to the College World Series finals. He also picked up a win earlier in the 2021 season against his Wednesday opponents when he threw five innings so only one race could score over five innings with three hits, three times and eight strokes.
In addition to the two aces, both teams will have their best relievers rested and ready to throw. Nick Maldonado and Luke Murphy will both be available for Tim Corbin and the Commodores, while Mississippi State relief ace Landon Sims has not thrown since Saturday’s win over Texas, allowing him to be fresh and ready to fight Vanderbilt.
