Before you create a file basketball bets For the upcoming NBA season, we thought this was a great time to reflect on NBA history! There have been all kinds of changes in the NBA over the years, and it’s time to highlight them!
How have things changed? How did the game become what it is today? Read on to find out.
How things have changed
The times of three inches on the inside look a long time ago now – the game is completely different. New moves have been introduced, and even player types have changed! Here are some of the ways the NBA has changed the past few decades.
Height and weight changes
When it comes to basketball, it is important to be able to jump these rings. As such, it’s no surprise to learn that taller players have always been sought after in the NBA. As the years went by, players got taller and taller. Back in 1969, you would usually find that the player is about 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighs only 205. Today? The overall height is 6 feet 7 and his weight is 220 lbs.
Basketball goes international
Back in 2018, more than 108 players from 42 different countries were making their way to the NBA rosters. Sports Illustrated reported that each team had at least one player who was not from their countries. This is not the first time that international players have participated in the NBA. About 30 years ago, the Soviet Union began allowing players to transfer to the NBA at the end of the 1988 Olympics. Basketball is actually one of the biggest sports in the world – only football has been defeated!
The game is faster thanks to the manual check penalty
The penalty kick came in 2004, and it was a pretty big room. Manual check is prohibited, which means that players cannot touch people on the opposite team with their hands unless they are in the immediate vicinity of the basket. Without this rule, players will take some time to reach the basket because their opponents will block every move. Now that this rule is in place, NBA games are noticeably shorter.
The NBA got an expansion
At one time, basketball was an all-American sport. But since 1995, basketball has made a legacy in Canada as well. There, the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Toronto Raptors made their way to the NBA. The more the merrier, eh?
More teams have been added
Back in 1969 – 1970, there were only 14 teams in the NBA. Seven of them were in the Eastern Division, while the other seven were in the Western Division. Now step forward when we have a whopping 30 teams in the NBA. That’s more than double the amount from the 1969 season!
Players get a salary increase
In 1969, NBA legend Bill Russell earned a maximum salary of only $100,000. Today, Stephen Curry is on a $201.16 million contract and will be paid out in excess of $40.23 million. This is a very big salary upgrade! Of course, this varies between players, but it is definitely a profitable sport if you have the talent to make it big.
Pointer 3 has really changed the game over the years. The three-point streak came into effect in 1979. It’s not a gimmick as players once thought, and it encouraged some impressive shots in the game.
A rise of 3 points also means that the property has increased. More and more rebounds happened, and each team had more possessions. As such, the game is fast paced. It’s easy to understand why fans have been on the edge of their seats, especially for the past 10 years. In fact, the league’s holdings per game increased from under 96 to nearly 101.
The popularity of jump shots has waned in the medium term
Slam dunk and the layup are still very popular, but you’ll see far fewer jumps inside the 3-point arc today than you would back in the ’90s. This is because the NBA prioritized long-range shooters instead.
With such a rich history, it’s no wonder we love this game so much! It’s no surprise that the NBA is still going strong today!
