Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly started talks with Southampton over defender Yannick Westergaard after an impressive season in 2020/21.
What’s the story?
According to Gary Jacobs, timesSpurs have begun negotiations with the south coast club ahead of a potential move for the highly-rated 28-year-old.
Nuno Espirito Santo is believed to want to add new centre-backs to his first team, and Westergaard has been identified as a key target after entering the final year of his contract.
Will Westergaard be a good signing?
It’s a big promotion
The Denmark international was a standout player for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men last season and carried his good form into Euro 2020.
His impressive displays for club and national team caught the eye of Tottenham Hotspur, and it’s easy to understand why they believed the 6-foot-5 monster could be the answer to their defensive woes.
Tottenham’s defense line came under intense scrutiny last season, with Eric Dier often Receiving Cash.
Compared to the England international, Westergaard’s core numbers are positive in several key aspects, highlighting the promotion he would provide, should he move to north London.
according to fbref.com, the Saints man completed 57.4% of his dribbles in 2020/21, outperforming Dyer’s 54.5%.
Although Dyer proved to be the most successful pass, finding a teammate 84.6% of the times compared to Westergaard’s 84.3% tally, the Scandinavian defender was superior in other key areas.
The former Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder completed 20 times in the final third and won 70.1% of his aerial duels, improving Dier’s totals of 11 and 65.2% on these metrics.
His dominant performances at St. Mary’s to Match of the Day Pundit Alan Shearer Westergaard was described as “fantastic” in December, and he’s gone from strength to strength ever since.
While it may not be the most formidable or exciting potential addition, it will be an improvement on the current options at Spurs and a signing that won’t break the bank.
While funds are expected to be limited at the capital club, this is a logical transfer for several reasons, and Espirito Santo is sure to welcome Westergaard’s arrival.
