Indian men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh said he is honored to have been called up as one of the flag bearers of the Indian contingent at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 202 Olympics. Six-time world champion boxer Mary Kom is the second athlete to complete the formalities on July 23.
Indian men’s hockey team skipper Manpreet Singh expressed tremendous excitement by being named the flag bearer of the Indian contingent for the opening ceremony on July 23 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The announcement was made by the Indian Olympic Association today. “This is amazing and I’m speechless,” Manpreet said when asked about the IOA’s decision.
Manpreet will only be the sixth hockey player to be named the flag bearer of the Indian contingent for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. Previously, Lal Shah Bhokari (Olympic Games in 1932) was a major Dhyan Chand (1936 Olympics), Balbir Singh Sr. (1952 and 1956 Olympics), Zafar Iqbal (1984 Olympics) and Pargat Singh (Olympics 1996) have had the honor of being flag bearers for the Indian contingent at the Olympic Games opening ceremony.
The 29-year-old Manpreet, who has collected 269 international national team matches, further said that this is a huge moment not only for him but also for Indian hockey. “I think it’s a huge honor to be named the flag bearer of the opening ceremony along with the incredible Mary Kom. I have always been inspired by her journey in boxing and personally for me, this is a great moment in my career and it is also a “I thank the Indian Olympic Association for this great opportunity and I look forward to the responsibility of the opening ceremony in Tokyo,” added the charismatic midfielder who will play his third Olympic Games.
