Three years ago, the Bleacher Report An episode of the Game of Zones series titled “Kings of the Sun”.. The joke was that a team made up of the best players from Sacramento and Phoenix combined still couldn’t compete against the best in the NBA.
At the time, it was a perfectly reasonable parody. The Suns were in a drought that began in 2011. They were about to start a season with their sixth coach in that time frame, a season that would result in 19 wins. They bombed in the draft multiple times, and it wasn’t clear if anyone on their roster other than Devin Booker was a guard going forward.
The Kings were there with them, having missed the post-season for an additional four years and boasting similar levels of organizational dysfunction. Sacramento ended up winning 39 games that year but fired Dave Gorger and hasn’t come close since.
Now, Phoenix is three games away from winning the NBA title. Before the first game of The NBA Finals After receiving information, fans across the country were asked to predict who they thought would win the tournament. According to the latest SB Nation Reacts poll, nearly three-quarters of fans believe Suns will win it all.
Meanwhile, the Kings are getting so close to what they were three years ago that the rebuilding process has been going on. Perhaps a dramatic change of course will give Sacramento fans some hope. If a franchise that has spoiled many decisions like Phoenix can be so close to a championship, perhaps all the Kings need is one stroke of good luck.
For the Suns, that came in the form of Chris Paul. If they end up winning the title, it will be in large part due to one of the greatest point guards ever, who asked to be traded to Phoenix to help lead this team. According to 58 percent of fans, the Suns base will win the best player in the NBA Finals.
Paul succeeded fellow Suns teammate Devin Booker, with 17 percent of the vote. The Bucks player most likely to take the award, according to fans, is Giannis Antetokounmpo.
In theory, the Kings have their poker at De’Aaron Fox, and they have another burgeoning young star in Tyrese Haliburton. But Marvin Bagley is no Deandre Ayton, and the flankers are barren of strong role players like Cam Johnson and Mikal Bridges, though the jury is still out on Robert Woodard and Jahmi’us Ramsey.
The real question is whether Sacramento needs to find Chris Paul, or if the Kings are still at the point where they need to prove they are worthy of attracting a star of his caliber. As Phoenix has proven, it doesn’t take long for a team’s fortunes in the NBA to change.
