She’s done it! Ash Barty claims Wimbledon honor in tense finale

Ashleigh Barty is one Wimbledon champion.

50 years after idol Evonne Goolagong Cawley’s historic victory at the All England Club repeated the world number one dose with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Czech eighth seed Karolina Pliskova.

The win will be her first Australian to claim Wimbledon singles since Lleyton Hewitt in 2002.

It was all Barty in the early stages when a nervous Pliskova’s terrible serving could not shoot, Aussie 4-0 up in an instant. While the Czech fought back with a couple of breaks, the set was already gone and Barty served it at 6-3.

After anxiety abundantly on both sides of the net in the opening set, the other saw a dramatic boost in quality, though the breaks continued to roll.

Barty looked to have the match in his team after breaking to a 2-1 lead, and then at 6-5. But Pliskova wanted to gather and keep his chances alive, and the Aussie could not earn the championship.

Pliskova once again lifted her game in tiebreak, a notable point where she hit the net twice and remains at the point that leaves everyone watching tenterhooks. This time, Barty’s serve would fail, a double fault that gave Pliskova a tie-break, and the set, 7-4.

Barty would recover, however, an early break in the third and final set that gave her a momentum she never gave up, making her second chance to earn the title at 6-3.
