Novak Djokovic reached the Grand Slam final on Friday by defeating Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in straight sets to move one win away from his sixth Wimbledon title and equal a record 20th Grand Slam title. The world number one prevailed 7-6 (7/3), 7-5, 7-5 in a tense semi-final as he saved 10 of his 11 break points. In the seventh Wimbledon final, Djokovic will face Matteo Berrettini after world number nine became the first Italian to reach the Wimbledon singles final by defeating Hubert Hurkacz 6-3, 6-0, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4.
“At this point in my career especially, the most important thing for me is the Grand Slam,” Djokovic said.
“It fills my heart every time something is historically at stake it motivates me.
Shapovalov was beloved by the crowd within two weeks of reaching his first Grand Slam semi-final.
The 22-year-old broke out in tears with a standing ovation.
