Natchez – For the first time in the school’s history, Natchez High School will play a volleyball team after the Natchez Adams School District recently announced that it has added the sport for the 2021-2022 school year.
The inaugural season will begin in August and games will be held at Morgantown Middle School, Alphaka Moore, director of athletics at Natchez. She said a schedule would be released soon. The Bulldog has appointed Jamal McCullin as their head coach.
“He’s coached the middle school football team for the last two years,” Moore said. “He said he was interested in coaching volleyball, so we named him our new volleyball coach.”
Moore said the process of hiring a head coach has been underway since the process of starting a volleyball program at Natchez High began a few months ago. She said she doesn’t know how many assistant coaches will be on McCullin’s crew.
Girls from seven to twelveThe tenth Classes can play on the team and tests will be held in the basketball hall from July 19 through July 21. The first session is from 9 to 11 am, the second session is from 12 to 2 pm, and the third session is from 3 to 5 pm
Moore said she doesn’t yet know how many players will be on the team.
“We have interest meetings for those who want to participate (on Friday) auditions are taking place on July 19. He didn’t choose his list,” Moore said.
Moore said the idea for Natchez High to own volleyball in the first place came from speaking with representatives from the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) and the Mississippi Coaches Association (MAC).
“I have seen that there has been a lot of participation in volleyball in a lot of schools across Mississippi. We have a lot of good (girls) athletes. Basketball and softball are our main sports,” Moore said. Young ladies compete in Mississippi. It also provides plenty of opportunities for undergraduate scholarships as well.”
