The Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Tuesday confirmed that India has secured the rights to host the BWF World Championship in 2026 while Suzhou, China, will host the BWF Sudirman 2023 Cup finals.
Suzhou was due to host the championship in 2021, but with the FIA unable to stage any championships in China this year, the event has been shifted to Fanta in Finland.
Suzhou will now stage the 2023 edition of the BWF World Mixed Team Championship, with the original 2023 host India accepting the opportunity to stage the BWF World Championship in 2026.
“Suzhou has demonstrated great capabilities in planning for the 2021 edition and we look forward to bringing the Total Energy BWF Sudirman Cup back to China in 2023,” International Women’s Federation General Secretary Thomas Lund said in a statement. “We thank the host organizers Suzhou, the China Badminton Association, as well as the Badminton Association of China. Indian badminton for their cooperation during this process.”
The BWF World Championship is the most famous badminton tournament. This is a singles tournament where players compete for the title of world champion.
Five events are offered – men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. First held in 1977 and originally hosted every two years, the BWF World Championship has, since 2003, been held every year except for the year of the Summer Olympics.
