Australians Jordan Thompson and Alex Bolt continued to perform well in the ATP 250 grasscourt championships in Newport.

Jordan Thompson qualified for the second round of the ATP 250 Championships on grass in Newport.

The seventh-seeded Australian was leading 5-4 in the first set when German rival Cedric Marcel Stipe retired.

She transferred Thompson to a second-round encounter with Japan’s Yuichi Sugita at the Open Hall of Fame.

Alex Bolt secured his place in the main draw with a tough 6-0 6-7 (2) 7-5 victory over American Ryan Harrison in the final round of the playoffs.

Bolt, ranked No. 146 in the world, drew American Jack Sock in the opening round. The 28-year-old is currently ranked 231 but is a former player in the top 10.

Astra Sharma qualified for the WTA 250 Championship in Lausanne, having another first-round encounter with Czech Kristina Pliskova.

The 25-year-old Sharma recently lost to Pliskova in three sets in the opening round at Wimbledon. This is a rematch on clay, though, and it’s a surface where the Australian has had some of her best Tour results.

It was a rough start for the Australians at the WTA 250 tournament in Prague, with Lisette Cabrera, Madison Inglis and Sam Stosur losing first-round singles matches.

Storm leaves Sanders as the last Australian player remaining in the lottery. She plays fourth seed Marie Pozkova in the first round tonight at the hard court event.
