England captain Ben Stokes has admitted he was surprised by how well a team selected at the last minute for the ODI series performed against Pakistan in their first two matches. England were forced to select a whole new team for the one-day series after seven members of the original unit tested positive for COVID-19.
Playing with the new faces, England won their first ODI by nine wickets and second by 52 rounds. They now have a chance to clean up Pakistan’s sweep by winning the one-day final on Tuesday in Birmingham. According to Stokes, the series’ win is a reflection of how the daring brand in England influences team culture
He said, “I was thinking about this the other day. When I was sent across the team, I read that even though it happened at the last minute, I thought we had a strong and talented team and I knew to be competitive against Pakistan, but it would be a lie that I say I wasn’t surprised at how easy it was to do, and that’s just a credit to everyone who has come here.
“It is a reflection of the mentality that England have when it comes to white ball cricket and modern gameplay, to just go out and express yourself and not worry about the occasion and not be scared. One of the great things that will come out of this series is for the inexperienced guys to come out and perform on the big stage. Against a very experienced Pakistani team. It was a tough turnaround to bring a group of players together, so put it all together and getting those two shows is a great achievement considering what happened.”
Phil Salt and James Vince appeared in an aggressive 97 position in the second wicket after England lost an early scalp in the second game. They recovered to post a decent overall and then the players continued to perform well. Reflecting on England’s performance, Stokes explained, “One thing I said when we wrapped up this morning [after training] It was most satisfying to see how inexperienced men reacted to that difficult period we went through in the middle. We were only able to play like the way Vinci and Sally played.”
Stokes will be looking to get a clean sweep when England face Pakistan on Tuesday. ODIs will follow the T20I series of three matches.
