Protracted talks about extending star Lionel Messi’s historic stay in Barcelona “are progressing sufficiently”, according to President Joan Laporta.
The 34-year-old saw his record-breaking 18-year association – which contained 672 goals in 778 games and 34 major titles – end with the Catalans on July 1 when his last deal expired. Difficulties in complying with La Liga’s financial fair play rules have complicated discussions between the parties over the renewal.
However, Laporta was optimistic about a successful outcome during the presentation of Mago Pop’s “Nothing is Impossible”.
“[Messi’s renewal] sufficiently advanced” He said.
“All the Catalans, Barcelona, Catalonia and the entire football world are happy that Leo won the Copa America.
“It is so exciting to see the best player in football history so excited to win a title like this and it made us all cry with joy.
“He’s so happy, we’re all happy, I’m so happy for Liu who made it through [to win the Copa America], along with his teammates, and that Argentina once again returned to the elite, and [I am] Also [happy] to [Sergio] Aguero.
“I am happy for the Messi, Argentina and Barcelona family who have been recognized, admired and loved for their relationship with Leo”
Messi was the player of the tournament last weekend when Argentina beat hosts Brazil 1-0 in the Copa America final, ending their first international drought.
