NEW YORK — Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Phoenix Suns surged in merchandise sales in the NBA, but LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers remained at the top of the league’s numbers released Wednesday.
The NBA and its players’ association announced that four-time NBA champion James led shirt sales, and the 2020 NBA champion Lakers were still the top sellers in merchandise sales.
A new movie starring James for four times in the NBA, “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” begins Friday.
No purchase totals or financial figures were released from online sales made through the League Store from March 11 through Tuesday.
Directly behind James in shirt sales was Antetokounmpo, who topped his sales rankings in second place by jumping three points over as he ranked first in the first half of the Covid-shortened season that began in December.
Brooklyn had three players in the top ten in shirt sales, led by Kevin Durant in third, Kyrie Irving in eighth, and James Harden in ninth, directly ahead of Portland player Damian Lillard.
Slovenian star Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks ranked fourth in jersey sales, followed by Boston’s Jason Tatum, Phoenix goalkeeper Devin Booker and Golden State’s Stephen Curry.
Greek star Antetokounmpo, two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, has racked up more than 22.8 million posts on his Instagram account this season, ranking him fourth among current NBA players behind James, Carey and Lillard.
Content on the NBA’s social media platforms regarding Antetokounmpo has generated over 131 million views worldwide, with 65% of passers-by subscribers choosing the Bucks, while fans in Greece overwhelmingly chose Antetokounmpo to follow.
Booker, who helped the Suns reach the NBA Finals against Milwaukee, climbed 12 places to sixth on the jersey list.
That helped the Suns go from 19th to third on the team’s overall merchandise sales list, trailing only the Lakers and Brooklyn and finishing ahead of Milwaukee, which jumped six points above what it was in March.
At number eleven, Tre Young of Atlanta reached her career best on the T-shirt sales list.
