Storms left in the dark at my head’s request

Spotlight: Stormers head coach John Dobson said his team was not involved in any discussions over Rasy Erasmus’ request to be replaced by South Africa’s ‘A’ in a game against the British and Irish Lions on Saturday.

Rugby director Erasmus made sure to press another game in favor of the hidden Springboks and requested a second SA ‘A’ match against the Tourists after Wednesday’s encounter.

But B&I Lions head coach Warren Gatland immediately poured cold water on the idea earlier in the week when asked to respond.

The Springboks are now set to face the Bulls in Cape Town in what will be a final ‘practice run’ before the Test series سلسلة

However, after South Africa’s “A” beat the B&I Lions 17-13 on Wednesday, Erasmus said at a media briefing that he is keeping the option to play the B&I Lions open again depending on the impact of COVID-19.

When asked if there was any communication from the Buck camp about what was going on, Dobson said, “No it wasn’t there. We got here. [team bubble] Last Friday, preparations were made, and I did not receive any official communication, other than what we read in the media.

“After last night [Wednesday’s] The game looks like that [possible second match between SA ‘A’ and B&I Lions] He’s still alive, but we haven’t heard anything.”

Storms appreciate Gatland’s position on the matter.

“For our players, we are thrilled that the game is moving forward, but obviously we would have been working for the South African rugby team,” Dobson told the media during an online media conference on Thursday.

“It’s a tough situation to be in. You want men to experience what would be a great occasion for us and at the same time you want to help the national cause.

“I totally understand Warren’s position. I think playing the counties maintains some kind of integrity on the tour.

“We would have gone with everything we were told to do, but we are really keen to play and we appreciate that.

“Maybe Warren feels that a week out of the trial match is a good opportunity for him to break some patterns and hopefully we can do everything we can to disrupt that.”
